The Lord Jesus Christ and His chosen apostles wanted disciples who would represent the kingdom of God in Spirit and truth. The Bible is replete with the understanding that true knowledge of the things of God must be shown by God Himself. This work is done by the Holy Spirit who inspired the scriptures and who must open one’s eyes to the accurate portrayal of the scripture’s meaning. In 1 Corinthians 3, the apostle Paul points out that even Christians performing works of the Spirit (the spiritual gifts) can yet be “carnal.” Carnal simply means they are operating from the fleshly side of their makeup, and the Bible teaches we have a “flesh” (the carnal identity) in opposition to a “spirit” (united with Christ (1 Cor. 6:17).
