Becoming spiritual and guarding against the flesh
Since the beginning of the church, Christians have been warned against “the flesh,” and exhorted to believe God and become spiritual (1 Cor 3). The New Covenant is a better covenant with better promises (Heb 8:6) and grace is both “unmerited favor,” and that which provides God’s spiritual enablement to know Him, hear Jesus’ voice (Jn 10), and be sons and daughters who “walk in the spirit (Gal 5, Rom 8). Salvation in Christ – Romans 5 Study and Side Commentary – Sept 1, 2017
Here we continue on in Romans, chapter 5, but a lot of side comments and even some quotes are read from ante-Nicene leaders (pre-300 AD / Constantine). The new creation is what God addresses in His Word, the Bible. His intent in redeeming a people to Himself, as foretold in the Old Testament, and fulfilled in the New Testament in Jesus Christ is to repair a broken relationship between humans He has called and Himself. Christians can become blurry on these things. Their “old man,” or “old creature” as they were “in Adam” may even try to act, but if they have been regenerated, they have a new spirit united with the Holy Spirit.
